Writing Again

Just a quick update. You would reasonably ask, “Why the hell are you writing here in English? Don’t you have that other blog, your Tumblr for those purposes?” There are two reasons for that. First of all, everything I’ve been doing lately is in English because I get ready to IELTS which is exactly in one week. Secondly, that’s my blog and I can do with it whatever I want. Dropping few lines in English occasionally will not hurt anyone. Besides, you do not want me to write all this on Twitter and spamming all over your precious timelines, do you? That’s right, I thought so. By the way, any corrections are welcome and very much appreciated.

I’ve started reading a book today which I’d wanted to read for so long. This is “Eat, Pray, Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert. It made me realize several things. You can only understand what kind of book you wish to write by reading somebody else’s books, being irritated and dissatisfied with them. I’m very irritated and dissatisfied. I know I’m not perfect. My English has never been perfect and now even more so. I’m neither a native speaker, no a professional writer. But I’m greatly dissatisfied with the way she tells her story. I haven’t yet finished it but I’ve hear her speak on TED Talk and I believe she could have done so much better! May be I’m just irritated that the book is too simple for me as I don’t have to look up some words in the dictionary every once in a while which I see for the first time as it happens in Jane Austen’s books. May be because Jane Austen is considered the classics of the classics of English literature and Elizabeth Gilbert is just a bestseller writer which only proves the fact that she is popular but not necessarily a good writer. I don’t know.

I’ve been thinking about my story for so long. I’ve been trying to see and understand how it develops. So many parts were missing. And then when you least expect it you get this craziest idea that shakes everything to the very foundation but suddenly you find those missing parts and everything clicks together seamlessly.

No, I don’t mind sharing a little bit of those great ideas with you. And even though I would still do as I wish I would like to know your opinion. What do you think? I’ve been always told that you can brighten even the most commonplace story by the way how you tell it. The story itself is not so important though it would be nice if it is interesting. It is the way you are telling which matters. That’s why it’s very important to chose from whose point of view you are going to tell it. That’s why I will never understand why on Earth Stephenie Meyer chose to tell the most part of her Twilight Saga from the point of view of an insecure and not very talkative girl. I’ve read a draft of the same story written from the point of view of Edward the vampire and it was so much better!

When I think about some stories I usually SEE them like a movie that’s playing in my head only for me. So many things to describe! Not only the characters and their actions, but their appearances, clothes, surroundings, colours, light and even the perfect soundtrack for each scene. Making a special movie just for myself is very entertaining especially when I can always decide what I want to happen next... I though that a video is a much more powerful storytelling tool than a text. And then I though I needed to come up with something that can be only done in a book and can not be filmed that way. So that the readers will enjoy reading the story in a very special way, to make it worth reading and not only watching. I wanted my narrator to be someone evil, with great sense of humour and lots of sarcasm. “Someone like us?” Sveta asked me. “Exactly,” I told her. It happens so that I find evil characters much more interesting and entertaining that the good ones. So this person will be a man who will tell the story and irritate and tease immensely not only the main characters but the readers as well because he knows so many things, he makes you want to know it at once but he is not going to tell you everything he knows when you wish him. Evil, very evil narrator! And while you are reading you’ll be dying to know who it is but you will not know till the end of the story. That’s what will make the book so unique. Because in the story the narrator also interacts with the main characters, the story can not be told without him. And in the movie therefore you will see him from the very first seconds and at least one riddle will be solved. But in the book I will make you wait till almost the very end to find out his true identity! I think that’s a great idea.

As for the main female protagonist of the story, I have great ideas regarding her as well. There will be several guys around her whom she will like and I could not chose forever with whom she will end up. Will it be the one or the other? And then I had this wonderful idea: why not to make her fall in love with somebody else, somebody completely different from everybody else who was present in the story? And I like this idea too much to let it go even though for a very long time I had no idea who it would be. Well, now I know and I’m so happy about it. I just hope that I’ll have enough time to write it down. I’ve already promised my best friend that she will be the first to read so I need to start some time soon.

I think you'll write a great book. Every great thing was made this way. All project management software sucked, that's why 37signals created Basecamp. All phones sucked, you know what happened ;-) Guess why I'm writing a web framework now.

You have some interesting thoughts. But your English sentences are hard to follow. Read more books. Your style and language will improve.

"I’ve read a draft of the same story written from the point of view of Edward" - where have you read it?
